Kids Christmas Crafts: Graham Cracker Gingerbread Houses

A couple of years ago I bought one of those Wilton gingerbread house kits.  I got all of the pieces out of the box and I’m not sure what the problem was (although I’m sure it was related to my being craft challenged) but I couldn’t for the life of me put the stupid thing together.  After some outside assistance everything turned out ok, but what a pain!  This year I decided to do graham cracker gingerbread houses with the kids and am happy to report that they acually came out ok (see above for proof!).  For anyone interested here are some instructions.

2 boxes graham crackers
1 tub frosting
1 squeeze bottle with medium tip
sharp knife
candy of your choice for decorating
cardboard (finally a use for all those boxes I have courtesy of my amazon habit!)
wrapping paper
tape

Prep:  Cut out generous squares of cardboard, and wrap with wrapping paper as you would a present.  These will be used as the bases for your houses.  You can also use foil, or not wrap them at all.

Start out by cutting the shapes out for the front and back of your houses.  Be prepared to go through a TON of graham crackers during this step!  After you have the front and backs cut out, size out the sides (I cut off a couple of inches to make them smaller but you don’t have to!) and set aside two crackers for your roof.

Spread a generous amount of frosting onto your wrapped cardboard covering an area large enough to accommodate your house.  Pipe frosting along the edges of the front and back pieces and then attach the two side pieces to the front piece.  Quickly attach the back piece and carefully place the structure on to the frosting covered wrapped cardboard.  This will give your structure some much needed stability and make things MUCH easier on you!  Pipe frosting along the edges of the house and stick on the pieces for your roof.  Let dry for a few hours and then decorate as desired!
