Kids Crafts: Valentine’s Day Graham Cracker Love Houses

Ever since we made our Graham Cracker “Gingerbread” houses for Christmas Miss Abigail has been bugging me to let her make them again.  I told her that it’s Valentine’s Day now and we don’t have Gingerbread houses for Valentine’s day.  So she asked me what kind of houses we DO have for V day, and after thinking about it for a minute I told her love houses.  So we decided to make graham cracker valentines day “love houses”.  If you’d like to make your own Valentine’s Day gingerbread love house, here’s some directions:

Supplies:

2 boxes of graham crackers
1 tub frosting (NOT whipped)
1 squeeze bottle with medium tip
sharp knife
candy for decorating (we used red hots, red and white gum drops, conversation hearts and sprinkles)
cardboard
wrapping paper
tape

Prep:

Cut out squares of cardboard, and cover them with wrapping paper or wrap in tin foil.  These will be the bases for your houses.

Directions:

Cut the shapes out for the front and back of your houses.  After you have the front and backs cut out, size out the sides (I cut off a couple of inches to make them smaller but you don’t have to!) and set aside two crackers for your roof.

Spread a generous amount of frosting onto your base making sure the area is large enough to accommodate your house.  Pipe frosting along the edges of the front and back pieces and then attach the two sides to the front.  Quickly attach the back piece and carefully place the structure on to the frosting covered base.  This will give your structure some stability and make things MUCH easier on you!  Pipe frosting along the edges of the house and stick on the pieces for your roof.  Let dry for a few hours and then decorate as desired!

When my son was in elementary school, his 4th and 5th grade classes made these. I remember the boys (especially) would pile on the candy and the houses would tumble down. The kids loved that project!

Faith, this is a GREAT idea! I’ve never thought about making the house out of graham crackers. My daughter, who is 14, still LOVES to build and decorate gingerbread houses … but I usually just buy the kit at Christmas. I think I’ll surprise her with a box of graham crackers and some decorations.

Those are cool! I did something similar with my 3 year old at Halloween and she loved it.

Oooo, I’ll have to remember this when we run out of time to do gingerbread houses before Christmas next year. There’s always Valentine’s Day!
